Tips

What is FLAC?

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo) just like you would an MP3 file.

Lossy VS Lossless

Compressed audio formats can be categorized as either "lossy" or "non-lossy". Examples of lossy formats are MP3, Ogg, AAC. These formats actually sacrifice quality in exchange for incredible compression, making the most of limited disk space. Lossy formats have a bitrate associated with them (or a "quality" setting), which allows you to determine what level of trade-off space vs quality is acceptable to you.

Lossless formats, FLAC for example, do not sacrifice any quality in the transition. They make a perfect digital copy of every bit from the original source. The bitrate is not a measure of quality anymore, it's simply a measure of how much compression the software was able to achieve, without sacrificing any data. These files are generally much larger than lossy formats, and the quality issue is negligible.

What's the difference between MP3 and FLAC?

The MP3 format is a lossy format. That means that an MP3 file does not contain 100% of the original audio information. Instead, MP3 files use perceptual coding. In other words, that means it removes the information that your ear doesn't notice thereby making the file smaller. The reason lossy formats are used over raw is that raw audio files are too large to travel over the internet at any great speed.

Like MP3 before it, FLAC is starting to be embraced by the music industry as a cost-effective way to distribute CD-quality-or-higher music, and it doesn't have the auditory problems of MP3s. FLAC is lossless.

The advantage of FLAC files versus the CD format CDA or WAV is that they use much less space, typically around half. Of course, FLAC still uses up to six times the space of MP3, but the advantage to this is that more information is retained, leading to an audible boost in quality. Furthermore, FLAC is not just restricted to CD quality, and you can buy files up to 24-bit/192kHz for another potential boost in performance.

What is the difference between (native) FLAC and Ogg FLAC?

You can think of an audio codec as having two layers. The inside layer is the raw compressed data, and the outside layer is the "container" or "transport layer" that splits and arranges the compressed data in pieces so it can be seeked through, edited, etc.

"Native" FLAC is the compressed FLAC data stored in a very minimalist container, designed to be very efficient at storing single audio streams.

Ogg FLAC is the compressed FLAC data stored in an Ogg container. Ogg is a much more powerful transport layer that enables mixing several kinds of different streams (audio, data, metadata, etc). The overhead is slightly higher than with native FLAC.
